“El Estado General de todo el Virreynato de Santafé de Bogotá de 1794" (Overview of the Viceroyalty of Santafé de Bogotá, 1794) is a map of a land far away in time, the viceroyalty of the Nueva Granada at the end of the 18th century. In this contemporary compendium, historians and curious readers can access a fairly complete introduction to its civil, ecclesiastical, and military institutions. Regarding civil matters, the bureaucratic structure is shown in its different instances: the wages of the officials; the tax structure and the management of income; mail, its routes and calendars; the forum and its attorneys; also, the list of rulers since the conquest is published. As for ecclesiastical matters, the religious orders and their convents, universities and their chairs, and the prelates who have governed the Church are listed. Besides, there is a detailed analysis of imports by Cartagena, members and painters of the Botanical Expedition are included, as well as a summary of the precarious military structure..."
