The 500-peso coins, minted by the Ibagué-based Mint, were put into circulation on 26 December 1993. The features of this coin were modified following the provisions of External Resolution 10 of 15 December 2006 of the Board of Directors of Banco de la República.

The motif on the obverse of the coin is intended to recognize the efforts of the municipality of Guacarí, Valle del Cauca, to conserve the samán tree. Manzur, a teacher, used this tree to highlight the importance of aspects related to ecology and environmental preservation.
