The 2,000-peso banknote design dated 07 March 2005 was put into circulation on 17 November 2006. This has the same design as the previous issue, dated 04 March 2005 but with the following differences:

  • The size of the banknote was reduced and went from 70 x 140 to 65 x 130 mm.
  • The date of issue was 07 March 2005.

When viewed from the obverse against the light, the watermark image of the hero, Francisco de Paula Santander, appears on the left side of the banknote. It is smaller in size than the one in the previous issue, with the same features of the portrait used in the main motif. The same effect can be seen on the right side of the reverse of the banknote.

On the obverse, in the area where the watermark is located, a special security device has been incorporated to prevent reproduction by photocopiers and scanners that consists of a design of very thin straight lines in violet and green. On the reverse, an additional anti-photocopying and scanner security device that consisted of a design of dark yellow circular lines was also incorporated.

Seen from the obverse, the lines that make up the reproduction of the first coat of arms of Nueva Granada are violet, as opposed to the green in the previous issue of banknotes.

General Francisco de Paula Santander Commemorative Edition

Portrait of General Francisco de Paula Santander

The 2,000-peso banknotes were put into circulation on 13 December 1996 to pay tribute once again to the “Man of Law” and former President of the Republic, General Francisco de Paula Santander.

On the reverse, the banknote features an illustration of the Casa de Moneda, one of the oldest buildings in Santa Fe de Bogotá, where Banco de la República's numismatic collection is housed.

We would especially like to thank the architect, José Pablo Sanint, designer of the banknote, and the Bank's officers and employees who were involved in this process.
