In 2023, Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia) celebrates a century of existence.
In 1939, a few years after its opening, the Bank began its relationship with culture when it acquired a piece of gold by request of the Ministry of Education to prevent it from being taken out of the country: the Poporo Quimbaya. Thus began a mutually beneficial relationship between its missional function as central bank and the management of heritage assets. This indissoluble link has allowed the Issuer to work in four lines of action: art, libraries, gold museums, and musical work, defined by the collections it has forged throughout the years.
This book records part of the memory of how this cultural process developed and matured thanks to the directors’ vision throughout these decades, deepened and developed by the technical, administrative, and support work of hundreds of people. Seeing the materialization of a network of physical, technological, and service infrastructure, extended today to 29 cities in the country, oriented to the preservation of national heritage with a differential approach, is perhaps the best way to celebrate this centennial and the primary incentive to continue working with dedication so that future generations can enjoy this cultural heritage of Colombia.
