The new 10,000-peso bill was put into circulation on 30 November 1995. With this banknote, Banco de la República (the Central Bank of Colombia) pays tribute to our heroine of the independence war, Policarpa Salavarrieta. The bravery and final martyrdom of this legendary woman made her the national heroine par excellence and an example of our mutual effort in the struggle for emancipation.
