Foreign investment

During the year 2000, foreign investment to Colombia amounted US$2.6 billion, registering a US$1.3 billion (97.2%) annual variation, which is basically explained by the increase in direct investment flows (US$1.2 billion, 92.5%). The main direct investments where destined to the communication sector (US$791 million) and to the electric sector capitalization (US$357 million). On the other hand, oil activities continue registering important capital reimbursements (US$2.1 billion). The direct foreign investment resources, excluding oil sector, were channeled to the communication sector, the financial sector, the mining sector and the manufacturing industry sector, which together made-up the 85% of the total of those resources. Portfolio investment registered a net flow of US$17 million, in contrast to the net outflow of US$23 million registered during the same period of the preceding year.
