Call for Paper IX-The Economy of Cities
The journal Ensayos sobre Política Económica (ESPE) invites the academic community to present papers for possible publication in its ninth special edition which will focus on the Economy of Cities. The guest editors are Luis Armando Galvis, researcher at the Center for Regional Economic Studies (CEER), and Adolfo Meisel, General Manager of the Central Bank of Colombia branch (Banco de la República) in Cartagena de Indias.
Papers submitted for possible publication must be original and not being considered for publication elsewhere. Economic historian Fernand Braudel remarked that “Towns are like electrical transformers. They increase tension, accelerate the rhythm of exchange, and constantly recharge human life... Towns, cities, are turning-points, watersheds of human history. When they first appeared bringing with them the written word, they opened the door to what we now call history.” (Fernand Braudel, Civilization and Capitalism, 1981). Currently, towns and cities are the protagonists of the countries’ economic and cultural development. These attributes have been
highlighted by economist Edward Glaeser in his recent book The Triumph of the City, stressing the role of cities as engines of growth where, thanks to the density of interaction and the flow of ideas, innovations are brewed and the most qualified human capital is attracted for the future development of these centers and countries in general.
